The government of Japan has gifted and handed over five speedboats to Maldives Police Service.
In a special ceremony held at K. Dhoonidhoo today, the speedboats were received from Japanese Ambassador to Maldives Ishigami Rumiko by Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen.
Deputy Commissioner Farhad Fikry, Executive Officers of Maldives Police Service and officials from the Government of Japan also attended the ceremony.
Speaking at the ceremony, Commissioner Naveen thanked the Japanese government for the continued support that they extend.
He acknowledged that the gifting of these speedboats will further enhance Police's marine operations and contribute towards better law enforcement on the seas.
He assured that the vessels would be used responsibly and professionally in public interest.
The Japanese Ambassador stated that the purpose of the vessels is to increase capacity of marine police and to assist in enforcing improved safety and security on the seas. She expressed hope that the donation would assist in alleviating some of the challenges faced by the Police.
Maldives Police presented an honorary plaque to the government of Japan in appreciation of their continued support.
Last year, the government of Japan gifted 54 cars and 4 vans to Maldives Police Service, along with several other equipment. Japan has also previously gifted vehicles and equipment to MNDF and Customs.
