Police have said today that they have decided to ramp up monitoring due to the increased numbers of young boys frequenting crime-prone areas.

In a statement released today, police reported that data from routine street patrols indicates a growing number of boys under the age of 18 are frequenting areas known for elevated criminal activity.

They stated that it is highly concern that children are being exposed to criminal environments, and emphasized the risk it poses of children being groomed for criminal activity.

The statement said that children exposed to such environments are more prone to engage in criminal activity, such as driving without license, running away from home, getting involved in drug abuse and other offences.

Police urged parents to bear these risks in mind and take precautionary measures. They called for parents to monitor areas where children frequent, and to instill habits promoting safety and responsibility.

Police said that they are conducting spot checks and ramping up surveillance through daily patrols in crime-prone locations.

Police also emphasized the need for sustainable action in collaboration with parents, Education Ministry, the State, and other relevant institutions to ensure child protection.

Police said that if any assistance is needed in a related matter, the public can contact the Family and Child Protection unit at 9790163 or the Victim Support Unit on 9770640. In the case of emergencies, the public is urged to dial 911.
