The government has awarded contracts to three private companies to build waste management centers on four islands, as part of its ongoing nationwide waste management and environmental improvement program.

In a statement issued today, the Ministry of Environment said the contracts were awarded under the “Environmental Improvement in All Inhabited Islands of the Maldives” and the Waste Management Project, funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The project was officially inaugurated today.

Waste management centers will be constructed in the islands of K. Maafushi, K. Thulushdhoo, ADh. Mahibadhoo, and ADh. Hanyameedhoo.

At a ceremony held at the Saafu Rajje Building, the ministry awarded:

  • V-Ava Investments Pvt Ltd has the contract to build centers in Thulushdhoo and Maafushi, for MVR 5.8 million. The work is expected to be completed within four months.
  • Sunny Land Investment Pvt Ltd has the contract to build the center in Mahibadhoo, for MVR 4.3 million, also to be completed within four months.
  • Elite International Pvt Ltd has the contract to construct the facility in Hanyameedhoo, for MVR 4.7 million, with a completion timeline of five months.

State Minister Mohamed Faiz signed the agreements on behalf of the ministry, while company representatives signed on behalf of their respective firms.

The ministry also noted that while construction work has now been handed over, some islands had already received waste management equipment, including garbage trucks, canning machines, and wood chippers, which were provided to local councils.
