President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has ratified the Maldives Intellectual Property Office Act on Thursday. 

The bill was passed by parliament on August 11. 

The Maldives Intellectual Property Office Act aims to establish a framework for the protection and promotion of intellectual property in the country. 

The Act also stipulates the establishment of the Maldives Intellectual Property Office and lays out its responsibilities and authorities, which the President's Office said aims to foster innovation and creativity in the commercial sector while facilitating economic development. 

The Act also calls for the establishment and management of the Intellectual Property Register. 

The new Act will come into effect from January 1, 2026.
