A young staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs who was pursuing higher education in Japan has passed away.

Lujaina Thasneema, 29, who had completed her course and was due to return to Maldives in a couple of months, passed away in Japan.

She was discovered unconscious in her room, after her family had been unable to reach her on phone for two days.

Lujaina went to Japan two years ago to pursue a Masters degree. She completed her course, and was waiting to return to Maldives in October after attending the graduation ceremony.

The family is now working on bringing Lujaina's body to Maldives for her funeral.

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has expressed condolences to Lujaina's family, remembering Lujaina as a highly talented, dedicated Foreign Service Officer.
