Maldives Police Service has launched an investigation following a reported increase in the use of forged academic certificates for job applications and higher education opportunities.
In a statement issued today, police noted a concerning rise in the submission of invalid educational documents. They warned that such fraudulent practices undermine the credibility of the national education system, grant unfair advantages to offenders, and negatively impact the quality of public services, academic integrity, and professional standards.
Authorities confirmed that the investigation is being conducted in collaboration with the Maldives Qualification Authority (MQA) and other relevant agencies. Several cases have already been investigated by the Fraud and Financial Crime Department and forwarded to the Prosecutor General’s Office for prosecution.
The police emphasized that submitting or using forged certificates is a criminal offense under the Penal Code. Specifically:
- Section 310 criminalizes the alteration, forgery, copying, and presentation of false documents as genuine.
- Section 311 pertains to the distribution of forged documents and related materials.
- Section 312 addresses impersonation.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to investigating and taking legal action against individuals involved in such offenses under these legal provisions.
Employers, educational institutions, and government agencies have been urged to remain vigilant and to adhere strictly to the national qualifications framework. Police encouraged all relevant bodies—especially colleges, universities, and public institutions—to verify the authenticity of certificates through proper channels.
In cases where a certificate's validity is in doubt, it should be verified through the MQA or relevant authorities. If authenticity cannot be confirmed, the matter should be reported to the police.
In a related development, the Bar Council recently reported a case involving an individual who allegedly forged a license to practice law, using the name and logo of the Judicial Administration and the Supreme Court.
