The Criminal Court has extended the remand of a 21-year-old Dutch woman, Brittany Adofo Boafo, who was arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle five kilograms of drugs into the Maldives.

Her detention has now been extended by 30 days.

Boafo, who is pregnant, was initially arrested on September 9 and placed in custody for 15 days. That initial remand period expired last Friday, prompting the court to extend her detention.

She was reportedly found with five kilograms of drugs in her luggage. During proceedings, the court noted that Boafo did not cooperate with a controlled delivery operation at the time of her arrest, citing that she was unaware of the procedure and that her luggage had been moved.

Her legal team requested that the investigation be expedited, highlighting her pregnancy as a significant concern.
