President Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the government has started efforts to develop tourism in Haa Dhaalu atoll, aiming to transform the region into a hub for local tourism and economic opportunities.

Speaking today, the President said the government is prioritizing the opening of islands to local tourism and expanding the sector across the atoll.

“This is something that has never happened here. No one before has established tourism in this atoll. We have now taken very important steps [towards this goal],” he said.

President Muizzu said that several islands and lagoons have been announced for tourism development, with significant concessions offered to attract investors. Some investors have already expressed interest and are in the process of submitting bids.

In total, 10 areas in Haa Dhaalu atoll including islands and lagoons have been opened for development. The President said he is confident that these initiatives will deliver tangible results.

He also highlighted progress on Naagoshi, a longstanding unresolved project, which has now been handed to the Maldives Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) for development. “We have facilitated this to happen, and it should proceed at a very fast pace,” he said.

President Muizzu further assured residents of Naavaidhoo that the government is committed to implementing plans and delivering outcomes for the atoll.
