Elections Commission (EC) has decided to dissolve the Maldives Thirdway Democrats (MTD), the political party founded in 2018 by former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb.

The commission said the decision was made as the party failed to maintain the required minimum of 3,000 members.

MTD had previously been given time to meet the membership threshold and managed to do so temporarily, but its numbers have since fallen short.

The dissolution was announced in the government gazette yesterday. EC has instructed the party to declare and settle any outstanding debts by the end of this month.

MTD, led by Adeeb; who is accused of involvement in the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) corruption case, has carried out political activities in the past, although it has been inactive recently.

Following his release under the previous administration, Adeeb has been living abroad.
