China is exploring the possibility of introducing advanced floating solar power projects in the Maldives, according to Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives, Kong Xianhua. The move comes as part of broader efforts to strengthen environmental cooperation between the two nations and promote sustainable energy solutions.

In an interview with Public Service Media (PSM), Ambassador Kong highlighted China’s global leadership in environmental protection and climate change mitigation.

He noted that floating solar farms, already being successfully deployed in Chinese waters, could be an ideal solution for energy generation in island nations like the Maldives.

"The Maldives is not an oil-producing country, but it has abundant sunshine year-round. This gives it strong potential for solar energy production," he said.

However, with limited land availability, the Maldives faces unique challenges in scaling up renewable energy infrastructure. Floating solar systems, which use advanced technologies including artificial intelligence can offer a promising alternative, the Ambassador explained.

He confirmed that China is actively working to assess the feasibility of bringing Chinese investors to launch a large scale solar project within Maldivian waters.

"If successful, such a project could not only help address the challenges in energy generation but also significantly reduce the country's dependence on oil imports and ease the strain on foreign currency reserves," he added.

Ambassador Kong also emphasized that environmental collaboration between the two countries extends beyond energy. He pointed to joint initiatives in marine research, technological cooperation, and the development of early warning systems for climate related hazards.

“China and the Maldives are working closely to address the threats of climate change through modern science and technology,” he said.
