As China prepares to host the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Tianjin this weekend, the close partnership between China and the Maldives is being spotlighted as a true reflection of the “Shanghai Spirit”: mutual trust, equality, and shared development.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is set to attend the summit, marking his second official visit to China since taking office. His participation signals the Maldives' growing presence on the international stage and its strong ties with one of Asia’s most powerful nations.
The Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Kong Xianhua, recently described the relationship as a living example of how nations, regardless of size, can cooperate with respect and purpose.
From landmark projects like the China–Maldives Friendship Bridge and Hulhumalé housing developments, to newer ventures in healthcare, trade, and tourism, the two countries have deepened their ties in both infrastructure and people-to-people connections. The recent launch of the China–Maldives Free Trade Agreement in January 2025 is expected to take this partnership even further.
Cultural and historical links also run deep between both the countries, dating back to ancient maritime exchanges between the Ming Dynasty and Maldivian royalty, the Ambassador noted in a statement. Today, both countries continue to share values and work together on global issues like climate change, sustainable development, and regional security.
As Ambassador Kong put it, the China–Maldives friendship “sails forward with full wind,” offering a hopeful example of what modern diplomacy rooted in mutual respect can look like.
