Home Minister Ali Ihusan appealed to the Police last night to not sell their integrity and to maintain the honor and dignity of their institution while performing their duties.
Ihusan spoke during the 40th Police Initial Training Course Passing Out ceremony last night at Dh. Vaanee, stating that Police are to carry out their obligatory duties without violating human rights. He went on to say that Police have to treat the public with respect, and to serve them in a friendly manner.
Ihusan also said that if an individual were to commit a crime or break the law in any way, the Police should still conduct their business within legal lines and treat that individual with the basic human rights that they are entitled to.
He stated that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, during this administration, will work towards building a police station at each island in the country in an effort to reinforce the infrastructure of the police, along with improving the services provided, with the aim of strengthening their bond with the public.
Ihusan has said that the role of the Police is very important in this country, due to the various issues plaguing the country. The government and the Police are working towards finding a solution for issues such as drugs, crimes committed by gangs, juvenile delinquency and crimes committed by foreign individuals.
As per the Minister, every Police officer has to work with integrity.
"The work that we [the Police] are doing has relatively low wage. And due to the ongoing and increasing social issues in Maldives, there will be instances where individuals will try to buy the uniform, dignity and honor of the Police," said the Minister.
"In these cases, Police officers have to say no, maintain their integrity and uphold the dignity of their institution. It will be a challenge for you today to symbolize that every police officer is fully committed to his duty."
Ihusan stated that those without integrity in the Police are rare and that there are steps being taken to ensure that the opportunity for such situations may never arise.
