Chinese President Xi Jinping has today assured that China will extend assistance towards reaching Maldives' development goals.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu met with President Xi Jinping today during his ongoing visit to China to attend the SCO Summit.

The two leaders held discussions focused on key areas of cooperation, including economic development, trade and investment, security collaboration and fostering people-to-people connections, the President's Office said.

During the meeting, President Xi Jinping reaffirmed that China remains committed to providing support to Maldives to reach its development goals.

The leaders agreed to further enhance Maldives-China relations under the Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership (2024-2028).

This is President Muizzu's second official visit to China after assuming office.

President Muizzu's first official trip to China was in January last year. During that visit, Maldives and China signed 20 MOUs.

Media reports in China state that leaders from 26 nations will be participating in the SCO Summit, scheduled to be held on Sunday and Monday this week. This includes Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

During the visit, the President will be holding bilateral meetings with President Xi Jinping and other foreign leaders, as well as participating in high level engagements, the President's Office said.
