President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit currently being held in China.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Modi confirmed the meeting, expressing optimism about the future of India-Maldives relations. He noted that the people of the Maldives stand to benefit significantly from the continued partnership between the two countries.
Modi had also paid a state visit to the Maldives on the 25th of last month, joining celebrations for the Maldives' 60th Independence Day. The visit marked a new chapter in the historically close ties between the two nations.
During the visit, India and the Maldives signed four key Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and three bilateral agreements. Notably, Modi also announced the launch of negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two countries.
One of the major agreements includes a USD 565 million (MVR 8.7 billion) line of credit to support development projects in the Maldives. Additionally, India has offered concessions on the repayment terms of a previous LoC signed during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
