A father got attacked with a knife by his son, who is suffering from mental health issues, in AA. Ukulhas.
Both the son and father have now been brought to capital Male' for further treatment. While the father is being treated for his injuries, the son is receiving psychological help.
Ukulhas Council President Shaukath Ibrahim said that the son, now 26, had been diagnosed with a mental health condition when he had been about 15 years old.
The incident last night followed a dispute about a regular administration of an injection that the son requires.
"Every time, they bring the son to Male' for the injection because he struggles against it. This time, the due date for the injection passed. The family deliberated with the island's health centre, council and relevant authorities in Male' and a decision was made to administer the injection at the island this time," he said.
Shaukath said that the son had attacked the father a while after health centre personnel had left the house after administering the injection.
The 60 year old father was initially treated at the Ukulhas Health Centre, Shaukath said. He was transferred to Male' early this morning as his condition was worsening.
"There was a wound about an inch deep on his left upper arm. Then there was another knife wound on his abdomen. He was discharged after receiving treatment at the island's health centre last night. He was brought back later because there was swelling around the wound on the abdomen," Shaukath explained.
Doctors in Ukulhas made the decision to transfer the father to Male' for further treatment due to the risk that the swelling may be caused by internal bleeding.
Shaukath said that as per the family, the father is now being treated at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). While his condition is currently 'stable', the extent of the injuries will be known after further tests are conducted.
The son was taken in to police custody last night and later released. He, too, was brought to Male' early this morning and is undergoing tests at IGMH.
