Yesterday on behalf of Maldives, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu presented a vision to the ongoing Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in expanding the organization's role in the progression and development of countries.

The SCO Plus Meeting that was held yesterday saw President Muizzu describe Maldives as resilient and determined, its climate change goals and shone a light on the Maldives 2.0 Digitalization work.

However, he recognizes that Maldives needs assistance at the international level in order to meet the country's set goals and went on to say that the SCO can play an important part in helping achieve this by expanding their role.

In continuation, President Muizzu presented three suggestions that the country envisions concerning the SCO.

First, as President Muizzu stated, SCO needs to make climate change and sustainable development one of their fundamental bases.

President Muizzu said that just like other smaller island nations, Maldives needs the technology and resources to combat and lessen the dangers of climate change and meet their goals and steps.

"We believe that the SCO can play an important and leading role in these key areas. Not just in financial assistance but building cooperative, long-lasting and meaningful relationships," said the President.

Second, as President Muizzu stated, he proposed SCO become the engine that connects nations in investments and business on a digital scale.

And third, as President Muizzu stated, he believes that the SCO can usher in an age of mutual respect and equal progress.

"We believe that every nation, regardless of size and location, should have the opportunity to weigh in on key global decisions," said the President.

During the meeting, President Muizzu expressed Maldives' support for the Global Governance Initiative proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping aimed at bringing about desirable changes in international cooperation, development and governance.
