MDP Parliament members were protesting outside the Finance Ministry and as they tried to enter, police officers were there to interfere with their efforts, leading to an escalation in the situation.
MDP Parliament members went to the Finance Ministry building in order to meet with Finance Minister Moosa Zameer. However, police officers lined up outside the ministry's doors, barring the MDP Parliament members from entering.
Supporters of MDP were also present, with some MDP Parliament members forcing their way inside the building. MDP supporters were protesting outside at the time.
The members that managed to get into the building found out that Minister Zameer was not present in the country currently. Nevertheless, members demanded that they meet with high ranking individuals of the ministry.
Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir has said that the Finance Ministry had told them a minister-level individual or advisor was to meet with them, but the meeting still hadn't happened to this day.
Mauroof said that 16 questions had been sent via the Parliament, but the minister hasn't been present in Parliament to answer these questions. He also said that many concerns caused them to go to the Finance Ministry building.
He went on to say that private Maldivian company's are failing and that the country is not receiving free international aid. Instead, costs of products and electricity bills are rising and are causing suffering to Maldivian citizens, said Mauroof.
"We have no confidence in fiscal policy and we have no idea what is going to happen to this country. This is why MDP has come out," said Mauroof.
He also said that the Finance Minister has to provide a clear picture as to the state of Maldives' financial situation and that if that information can't be divulged to the public, then it is a matter that brings worry. He also said that civilians should try and find out this information as well.
