President Muizzu has shared with the PNC Parliamentary Group an idea to reduce state-funded benefits for former Presidents and former Members of Parliament.

A member of the PNC parliamentary group, which holds supermajority in Parliament, told Mihaaru News that the President raised this idea informally in a WhatsApp group chat among PNC members. Speaking anonymously, the member said the President brought it up in response to growing public concern.

"The President mentioned that government spending on former officials is going up, and many people have started raising concerns on social media. He acknowledged those concerns," the member said.

However, the President has not yet presented this idea to the parliamentary group as an official proposal.

Recently, public attention has turned to the rising costs associated with benefits for both former and current MPs and Presidents. This discussion was sparked after spending figures were shared online under the Right to Information Act.

According to the released data:

 • Over the past 10 years, the state has spent more than MVR 18 million on health insurance for former Members of Parliament.
 • In just the past year, current MPs have spent approximately MVR 1.5 million on VIP lounge services.
 • Former MPs start receiving a monthly allowance once they turn 55.
 • Former Presidents also continue to receive monthly financial support.

The public response to these numbers has been vocal, especially on social media, where many are questioning whether such spending is justified.
