Former Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof has said tonight that the reasons behind his decision to leave Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) will be clear to 'those who need to know', adding he does not wish to voice any complaints.

After months of staying away from MDP activities, Mahloof officially quit the party today. The move has faced speculation, and even criticism, from members of MDP, as well as the general public.

In a post on Facebook, Mahloof stated that the decision to leave MDP did not come easy. However, the reasons behind having to do so would be clear to some within the party, he said.

Mahloof moved away from MDP's activities after having announced he will be contesting on an MDP ticket for the post of Male' Mayor in the most recent election. He later withdrew his candidacy.

Mahloof expressed regret if his departure from MDP caused any resentment, and said he hopes it won’t affect friendships.

"It has been two years since I have spoken at a political podium, or TV show, or engaged in any political work. I thank all those who welcomed my decision today. I apologize to those who are unable to accept the decision," his post read.

"However, the most criticism is coming from those who worked hardest to change the MDP administration. I have become wrong today to those who saw me as right yesterday," he wrote.

"There are no political parties that hold steadfast to set policies. There is no leader who is committed to a single ideology and has not changed."

Mahloof stated that he is honoured to have served the country in a cabinet position during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Mahloof joined MDP after leaving Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) due to differences in opinion during former President Abdulla Yameen's administration. At the time, he had been serving as an MP through being elected on a PPM ticket.

Mahloof began his political career with Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), led by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

He is yet to reveal future plans in his political career. He is currently engaged mainly in sports activities.
