President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's decision to allocate a fixed percentage of next year’s state revenue to the judiciary, is a major step toward ensuring its financial independence and speed up the administration of justice, Supreme Court said today.

Speaking today, the President revealed that the proposal was discussed during a Cabinet meeting held yesterday, where the focus was on enhancing both the financial and administrative autonomy of the judiciary. He described the move as essential for the judiciary to function independently and effectively.

Rather than working within previously imposed budget ceilings, the judiciary will now receive a block grant based on a specific percentage of state revenue, an increase from past allocations.

The Supreme Court welcomed the decision in a post on social media platform X, calling it a “historic step” that will help resolve many long-standing financial challenges within the justice system.

“We believe this decision will accelerate the administration of justice and strengthen the foundations of an independent judiciary,” Supreme Court stated.

It also expressed gratitude to President Muizzu for initiating legal and systemic reforms to make the change sustainable over the long term.

The lack of financial independence has long been seen as a barrier to the judiciary’s ability to operate without external influence.
