Ismail Zariyand to contest Malé mayoral race on PNF ticket

Ismail Zariyand, the former Chairman of the National Tender Board, officially announced tonight that he will be contesting for the position of Malé City Mayor in next year's Local Council Elections. Zariyand will be running on the ticket of the People’s National Front (PNF), the party led by former President Abdulla Yameen.

The announcement was made during a PNF gathering held tonight at Artificial Beach under the theme "Reset."

Zariyand, a well-known former football goalkeeper with an extensive professional background in auditing and accounting, shared that his decision to run was heavily encouraged by former President Yameen. He described Yameen as a leader who possesses a clear vision for national development.

Interestingly, Zariyand’s move to join Yameen’s political circle marks a significant shift, as he had previously been closely associated with the political activities of former President Mohamed Nasheed.

His entry into the race adds another layer of competition to what is becoming a high-profile battle for the capital's leadership. Zariyand will face off against the ruling PNC candidate, former Defense Minister and Chief of Defense Force Moosa Ali Jaleel.

Meanwhile, within the main opposition party (MDP), a competitive primary is expected between the incumbent Mayor, Adam Azim, and the former Member of Parliament for Medhu Henveiru, Ali Azim, both of whom are seeking their party's ticket for the same seat.
