Sheikh Mohamed Shifan was elected as the President of the Adhaalath Party yesterday.
As per a statement released by the party last night, the results of the party's fourth term election for a President saw Shifan win with 99 percent of the votes. Even though the percentage was revealed, the party did not divulge the amount of votes nor how many people had voted.
Shifan's running mate Sheikh Abdulla Rasheed is the current Vice President of the party.
Interim results
Candidate Number 1: Sheikh Mohamed Shifan - 99 percent
Candidate Number 2: Dr. Ikram Abdul Sattar - One percent
The Adhaalath Party stated that 22 percent of those who were eligible had voted.
As per the Elections Commission's (EC) website, there are 8,267 Adhaalath Party members. With that, if everyone on the register was eligible to vote, around 1,800 members had participated in the voting process according to the party's statistics and the EC's website.
The voting took place yesterday from 9:00am to 8:00pm via the Fahi Vote online application.
Two candidates applied for the position of Adhaalath Party President: Dr. Ikram Abdul Sattar and Sheikh Mohamed Shifan. However, Dr. Ikram decided to boycott the election following the decision to conduct the voting online.
There has been internal disagreement within the party regarding the voting method. Dr. Ikram had requested both the party and the Elections Commission to place physical ballot boxes instead of holding the vote online.
However, the party stated that its election regulations do not allow for the placement of physical ballot boxes. Dr. Ikram claimed that while the Elections Commission had instructed the party to conduct the election affairs transparently, the party had shown rigidity and ignored these instructions.
Newly elected President of the Adhaalath Party Sheikh Mohamed Shifan obtained his degree in Shariah from the Islamic University of Madinah. Additionally, he has achieved a Master’s in Business Administration from the Maldives Business School.
He was elected upon former party President and former Home Minister Imran Abdulla's term coming to an end.
