Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has asserted that there is no prisoner abuse or brutality in prisons, stating that it is a matter under strict monitoring.
The statement comes following allegations of prison brutality leading to the death of Hulhumale' Prison inmate Hassan Niyaz, Dhiggaagasdhoshuge, S. Hithadhoo yesterday.
Corrections stated that Niyaz faced a sudden medical emergency yesterday afternoon and was rushed to the Hulhumale' Hospital at 1:30pm. Doctors reported that he had passed away at 2:05pm, they said.
Niyaz, 45, was convicted of trafficking diamorphine and sentenced to 25 years in prison last Thursday.
Speculation arose on social media that he had been tortured in jail, stating that there were visible bruises on his neck and chest.
Responding to these allegations, Corrections said that no prisoners will be abused within the prison system. They stated that they have strict monitoring in place to prevent any such incident.
Corrections said that the death of an inmate is immediately reported to police, the inmate's family, Inspector of Correctional Service, Human Rights Commission of the Maldives and Integrity Commission. They stated that if there are any such allegations, the relevant authorities will conduct an investigation.
