Government staff to receive Ramadan allowance before February 12

Finance Ministry has decided that in accordance with the law, Ramadan allowance for employees of government offices will be disbursed before February 12. 

As per the calendar, the first of Ramadan this year falls on February 18. A circular released by the Finance Ministry today details the policy on issuing Ramadan allowance. 

As per the policy, the Ramadan allowance to government employees must be paid before February 12. Allowance funds must be uploaded to the Public Accounting System ahead of February 10, and posted, the circular said. 

As per the Employment Act, every muslim employee should receive MVR 3000 as Ramadan allowance. 

Other key points in the Finance Ministry circular

  1. For employees serving more than one salaried job, the Ramadan allowance should be paid by the primary employer only
  2. Employees on pay leave (on scholarships) and no pay leave at the start of Ramadan to be excluded from those receiving Ramadan allowance
  3. If such an employee returns to work during Ramadan, Ramadan allowance should be calculated based on the number of days of Ramadan they spend at work
