A petition was submitted to the People’s Majlis today seeking a solution to the issue of foreigners and tourists wearing revealing clothing and bikinis in the public areas of inhabited islands across the Maldives.

This petition was submitted through the electronic petition system (e-petition portal) inaugurated by the Parliament yesterday.

The petition, submitted by Sheikh Zamzam Farish, stated that tourists and foreigners wearing revealing clothing in public places poses a threat of eroding Islamic morals and the rich culture and traditions inherited from Maldivian ancestors. Highlighting that this is an issue of immense concern for many citizens, the petition noted that such actions are having a negative impact on young Maldivian children.

Emphasizing that this is a major obstacle to raising children with an Islamic upbringing, the petition requested three specific actions to resolve the issue:

  • Strengthening the enforcement of existing regulations to resolve the matter more effectively than at present.
  • Formulating new laws regarding how to take action against those who violate the regulations.
  • Establishing a system whereby strict legal action can be taken against those wearing revealing clothing in public places.

The petition, which was submitted with approximately 150 signatures, is now open for the general public to sign as well. Such issues primarily surface in islands where local tourism is flourishing.

Although specific areas are designated for tourists, issues frequently arise regarding tourists acting in a manner that contradicts general social standards.
