National Center for Neurosciences and Stroke has been officially opened at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), bringing neurological services under one roof for the first time in the country.

The center was inaugurated yesterday following close collaboration between IGMH’s neurology, neurosurgery, pediatric neurology departments, and hospital management. According to IGMH, the new facility marks a major step forward in the treatment of brain, spinal and stroke related conditions in Maldives.

The center will support advanced brain and spinal surgeries, including procedures using robotic technology, and will enable rapid stroke treatment through a nationwide connected system.

IGMH said special programmes will be implemented in collaboration with atoll hospitals, ensuring access to quality neurological care for patients across the country.

With the introduction of new neurological treatments and procedures last year, the hospital noted a reduction in the number of patients travelling abroad for treatment.

Planned services and developments

According to IGMH, the center will continue to expand neurological services, including:

  • Expansion of the stroke center
  • Introduction of specialized laboratory tests not currently available in the Maldives
  • Video EEG services
  • Neuronavigational-guided surgery
  • Establishment of a neurosurgical intensive care unit (ICU)
  • A two-year fellowship programme to train doctors in the endovascular field

Objectives of the center

The main objectives of the National Center for Neurosciences and Stroke include:

  • Early detection of neurological diseases
  • Prompt medical intervention
  • Strengthening in-country treatment capacity
  • Reducing the need for overseas medical referrals

IGMH said the center will also carry out public awareness programmes, with a particular focus on early diagnosis and treatment of neurological and brain disorders in children, aimed at reducing long-term disability.
