President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu today congratulated the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) for winning the Bangladesh general election with a substantial majority.
Following the collapse of Sheikh Hasina's government during the bloody protests of 2024, the first election was held, where the BNP, the party of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who passed away last year, and its affiliated coalition secured 212 seats out of the 299 seats in parliament.
In a post on X, President Muizzu also extended his congratulations to the party's chairman, Tarique Rahman, the son of Khaleda Zia, on the BNP’s historic victory, and renewed his hope for productive collaboration with the new BNP government.
The President further stated his aspiration to strengthen the long-standing ties between the two nations and to broaden and solidify this relationship even further in the future.
It is anticipated that Rahman will become the new Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
Muhammad Yunus, the 85-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate, had taken charge of governing the country and overseeing matters until the election after Hasina’s 15-year rule came to an end in August 2024. His government had also banned Hasina’s Awami League from contesting in this election.
Hasina, in her absence, has been sentenced to death, in addition to other major sentences, over the killings during the protests against her rule.
