Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has stated that tomorrow will be the first of Ramadan as the moon will be visible tonight.
In a post on X, Maumoon said that astronomical calculations show that Ramadan will begin tomorrow.
In the post, he extended Ramadan greetings to all.
The calendar also has February 18 set down as Ramadan 1. However, some countries have announced that there, Ramadan will begin on February 19.
In Maldives, the moon will remain below the horizon at sunset today. However, in Addu at the southern tip, it will briefly rise above the water and be visible for less than a minute at sunset.
So, although the moon may not be visible to the naked eye, astronomical calculations show that Ramadan will start in Maldives tomorrow. The moon will be visible above the horizon at sunset today in Saudi Arabia as well.
Even in countries where the moon may be above the horizon at sunset, it is unlikely that the moon will be visible to the naked eye, as the new moon will be hard to spot within the rays of the setting sun.
As the sun and moon travel in straight lines, some countries will also be experiencing a solar eclipse today.
