The Supreme Court (SC) has voided the Elections Commission's (EC) decision in revoking the candidacy of a Local Council Election candidate.

Two election complaints were submitted to the Supreme Court. One of them was by Abdul Majeed who is an independent candidate for the position of President of K. Guraidhoo Council and the other was by Fathimath Suzan who is an independent candidate for the K. Thulusdhoo Council.

The Supreme Court made the decision in both cases yesterday, with Suzan's candidacy being rejected by the EC not having a valid legal basis, as per the court.

Her candidacy was rejected over a matter of unpaid debt.

While the Thulusdhoo Court had sentenced Suzan to pay the debt, the record of the matter is not available at the Finance Ministry. The Supreme Court's sentence states that as the submission of enforcement regarding the debt and maintaining records are the responsibility of the ministry, the responsibilities not being fulfilled does not mean that Suzan has not paid the debt.

And so, the Supreme Court determined that Suzan meets all the requirements in running for the election.

Regarding Abdul Majeed's case, the Supreme Court ruled that they do not have the jurisdiction to handle the case. The commission rejected his candidacy due to some information being left out during submission as a candidate.

Supreme Court stated the court only has jurisdiction over the EC's candidacy requirement decisions.

With these two cases in court, the candidate numbering of both islands will not move forward. The numbering of candidates of all other islands have already been done.
