A pickup truck driver who obstructed an ambulance in Male' today has been fined, and has had his licence seized.

A Police media official revealed that the pickup driver was fined MVR 750, with his licence also being held.

"He will not be able to drive any vehicles now. Police will now forward the case to the Transport Ministry. A committee at the Ministry will then decide what further action will be taken against him," the Police media official said.

The Transport Ministry also stated earlier today that the case would be looked into, and if required, appropriate action would be taken.

Videos circulating on social media show the pickup remaining in place and blocking the street while goods were being unloaded, despite an ambulance being stuck behind it with its siren blaring.

There was a heavy traffic jam with other vehicles brought to a halt in addition to the ambulance due to pickup blocking the street. Regardless, the pickup only moved once all the goods had been unloaded from it.

The incident comes days after another case in which vehicles failed to give way to an ambulance attempting to turn near the President’s Office.
