The Maldives Food and Drug Authority has issued a statement urging businesses to stop packing food and drinks in used single-use plastic bottles.

MFDA said that it has come to their notice that businesses continue to pack food products for sale in used water and beverage bottles.

These bottles are made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and meant for single use and for packaging certain types of products, the MFDA said. However, it has come to the authority's notice that different varieties of food products are being packaged in re-used bottles of the kind, they added.

MFDA cautioned that this increases the risk of plastic contamination in the food, posing health hazards.

MFDA urged businesses to avoid reusing single-use plastic bottles and bags to pack food items.
