Government funding for diploma programme to train SEN teachers

Ministry of Education has signed an agreement with the Maldives National University (MNU) to conduct a fully funded diploma programme to train Special Educational Needs (SEN) teachers.

According to the ministry, the course will be offered under the Border National Teachers Training Initiative and is aimed at strengthening support for students with special needs.

All tuition and related expenses will be covered by the ministry. In addition, each enrolled student will receive a monthly stipend of MVR 1,500.

During his presidential address at the opening of this year’s parliamentary session, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced measures to expand educational opportunities for students with disabilities.

These include allowing such students to sit the national “All-Well” examination, as well as facilitating homeschooling or home-based study options.

The President also pledged to ensure that all schools are equipped with the necessary facilities to accommodate students with disabilities.
