The 19-year-old driver of the motorcycle involved in a fatal accident on Boduthakurufaanu Magu on Tuesday night has been released under conditions.
The accident claimed the life of the passenger, 16-year old Mohamed Nihan Nazim, of Hiyaleegulshan, B. Dharavandhoo. Nihan was a Grade 10 student at Imadhudheen School who had been sitting for O'Level exams this year.
The motorcycle involved in the accident had been driven by Mohamed Aadhin Arif, 19, of Nedhunge, R. Inguraidhoo. Police have said that he does not possess a driving license.
Police earlier said that the accident occurred near the Sinamale' Bridge when the speeding motorcycle lost control and crashed into the pavement.
Aadhin's release order states that he told the investigation the accident had not been deliberate. He expressed remorse and his defence requested his release, even if under strict conditions.
Police said in court that in consideration of his injuries sustained in the accident as well, they have no objection to releasing him under strict conditions if he agrees to cooperate with the investigation.
If Aadhin breaches the conditions, police are authorized to take him back into custody. However, the order does not specify what those conditions are.
