The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives today urged Maldivians living in countries targeted in the attacks amidst the unrest in the Middle East, following the U.S. strikes on Iran, to refrain from going outdoors.
In a statement released by the Ministry, it appealed to Maldivians residing in or traveling to countries in the region to prioritize their safety and security in connection with the unrest that has commenced in the Middle East.
Specifically, the Foreign Ministry urged Maldivians currently in countries under attack to minimize outdoor movement as much as possible and to act in accordance with the safety and security instructions provided by the respective governments of those nations.
The Ministry also stated that the situation of Maldivians currently in Middle Eastern countries is being closely monitored by the Maldives Foreign Ministry and Maldivian embassies located in the Middle East.
Furthermore, to facilitate the provision of consular assistance if necessary, Maldivians in the region have been requested to register with the nearest Maldivian embassy as soon as possible.
Following the commencement of joint attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran, Iran has been launching retaliatory strikes targeting U.S. bases throughout the Middle East. While an Iranian attack has targeted Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, attacks have also been launched against Kuwait.
Additionally, Qatar has intercepted two strikes. Alerts are still being sent to phones in that country, advising people to stay safe as further attacks are expected. Bahrain has stated that an Iranian strike targeted a U.S. military base.
An AFP journalist in Riyadh, the Saudi capital, said that the sound of a powerful explosion was heard there as well. However, details regarding that explosion are not yet available. Sounds of explosions have also been heard in Dubai.
Furthermore, Jordan has stated that it has intercepted several Iranian strikes. Airspace has also been closed in the countries targeted by the attacks.
Consequently, a large number of people have become stranded at various airports worldwide.
