A foreigner working at a building under construction in Hulhumalé has sustained serious injuries after falling and being speared in the stomach by an iron rod.
Mihaaru News has learned that the incident occurred today while he was working on the construction of the Redwave Mall in Hulhumalé Phase 2. As the rod pierced his intestines and caused them to rupture, an operation has been performed at Hulhumalé Hospital to treat the injury.
The hospital stated that the person brought in with injuries is a 30-year-old Bangladeshi male and that he is currently in the operating theater for surgery. The hospital did not provide further details regarding the extent of the injuries he sustained.
Although he fell onto an iron rod which pierced his stomach and ruptured his intestines, it is reported that no organs critical to life were damaged.
While people have sustained major injuries in various incidents occurring in the work environment, many lives have also been lost. Among these, the majority are Bangladeshis, who make up the largest portion of the expatriate population working in the Maldives.
