Applications have opened for land under the “Goathi Gedhoruveriya” housing programme for individuals whose spouses already own housing.

The Housing Ministry said applications opened from today until 11:59 pm on April 30. Applications must be submitted through the Boahiyaavahikan Portal.

Under the programme, successful applicants will receive 1,250 square feet of land.

The scheme has two categories:

  • Category 1: Residents of Male' City
  • Category 2: Residents of other islands currently living in Male'

Applicants are required to submit several supporting documents, including proof of property ownership if land or flats are already registered in their name.

For residents of Male', a document from a government agency confirming the date of registration must be provided. Applicants may also submit employment certificates issued by government institutions or private employers, or documents from educational institutions, to verify their period of residence in Male'.

Further information can be obtained through the ministry’s hotline numbers.

Alongside the programme, the government will also open a special “Binveriya” scheme, aimed at individuals who previously received land in joint applications but wish to submit a individual application and relinquish their joint plots.

Applications for the Binveriya special scheme will open from March 24 to April 30, the Housing Ministry said earlier.

The new housing initiatives were announced by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during his Presidential Address at the opening of Parliament earlier this year.

Under housing programmes launched in January, individuals were not eligible to apply for flats or land if their spouse already owned housing in the Male' area. President Muizzu later announced a separate programme to allow such applicants to seek housing.

A total of 1,000 plots will be allocated under each of the programmes.
