Najah noted that several administrative matters still need to be completed before the full transfer of services is finalized, but said there should be no disruption to service provision.

State Electric Company (Stelco) has been awarded the contract to provide electricity, water and sewerage services in Kaafu atoll Huraa.

The agreement was signed on Monday between Stelco Deputy Managing director Dr Ali Azwar and Fenaka Managing Director Mohamed Najah at a ceremony held at Stelco. Huraa MP Anara Naeem also attended the signing.

Speaking after the agreement, Azwar said Stelco already provides utility services to most islands in Kaafu atoll, with Huraa previously served by Fenaka.

He said services in Huraa should be brought to the same standard as other islands served by Stelco.

“We believe further development work is needed on the island regarding these services. The necessary plans have already been made and work has begun,” Azwar said.

He added that Stelco will begin working closely with residents to improve the quality of electricity, water and sewerage services, in collaboration with Fenaka and the Huraa island council.

Azwar said Stelco will begin meter readings of all households on the island from Tuesday, after which electricity bills will be issued by Stelco.

Fenaka Managing Director Najah said the decision to transfer the services was made under the direction of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, with the aim of strengthening service delivery across the atoll.

Najah noted that several administrative matters still need to be completed before the full transfer of services is finalized, but said there should be no disruption to service provision.

He added that the remaining administrative work is expected to be completed within this month, after which the services will be formally handed over to Stelco.
