Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) stated today that no discussions of any kind have been held with the government so far regarding increasing the fees charged to boats and vessels using the Malé North Harbor area.

The company issued this press statement in response to claims made by opposition parties during the ongoing local election campaign, alleging that a decision had been made to increase fees for sea vessels using the North Harbor area.

Countering those remarks, MPL stated that the company has not carried out any discussions with the government regarding an increase in fees.

"Therefore, the talk being spread regarding this matter is baseless and contrary to the truth," the statement said.

MPL stated that along with the project to asphalt and upgrade Boduthakurufaanu Magu, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has instructed the expansion of services at Malé North Harbor and the provision of water and electricity services to vessels using 'Zone A'.

Therefore, MPL said that work is underway to begin those services.

"The aim of this company is to provide services to the boats and vessels using Malé North Harbor in the most convenient manner possible. In that regard, some changes have been brought to the policy followed for allocating space for vessels at Malé North Harbor starting from the 14th of March. As a result of this change, the time cargo boats have to wait in queue will be reduced, providing further conveniences in obtaining services," MPL said in its statement.

According to the company, no fees are currently charged to any vessels using "Zone D," "Zone E," and "Zone F" of Malé North Harbor, which are specifically designated for fishing boats.

MPL said that the only change brought to the policy followed by the company when those zones were reopened after the Boduthakurufaanu Magu development project was ensuring that no vessel not registered with the relevant government authorities can use the area.

"As Malé North Harbor is a place linked to the interests of many citizens, it is regrettable that false information is being spread that creates unease among the public. Furthermore, this company appeals not to spread such groundless talk regarding services related to the citizens," the statement said.
