Ibrahim Aboobakuru, the current council member for the Maafannu West constituency who is contesting the upcoming Local Council elections as an independent candidate, has decided to support the PNC candidate.
Ibrahim was originally elected to the Malé City Council on a PPM ticket. Subsequently, in 2024, he joined the PNF, the party established by former President Abdulla Yameen. He contested for the council seat this time as an independent.
However, he has now decided to support Mohamed Areesh, the current Deputy Mayor of Malé City, who is contesting for the seat on a PNC ticket.
Upon the arrival of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu today to participate in Areesh’s campaign door-to-door activities, Ibrahim visited the site and stated that his decision to run as an independent was due to a "communication error" encountered during the submission of his forms.
"Otherwise, I truly do not wish for the party to sustain damage of this magnitude. I myself do not know how things unfolded in that regard. The President was also aware of how it stood," Ibrahim said.
Therefore, he requested voters to cast their votes for Areesh, the PNC candidate currently contesting for the constituency.
The President stated that Ibrahim has been a member who worked very well in the council since his own tenure as Mayor. The President expressed his gratitude for the decision to support the PNC candidate.
"I am very happy that even though it was too late to withdraw the candidacy, you decided not to proceed further in the election and decided to support our Deputy Mayor Areesh. This is something I am very happy about, thank you very much," the President said.
The President is currently conducting door-to-door activities across all constituencies in the Malé area.
Moosa Ali Jaleel is contesting for the position of Malé City Mayor on the PNC ticket, while Aishath Alaika is contesting for the presidency of the Women's Development Committee.
