The Transport Ministry has given a 60-day period for electric vehicle (EV) owners to switch to new green license plates under updated regulations.

The change follows the seventh amendment to the Road Traffic Regulations, which came into force yesterday.

Under the amendment, personal-use EVs must display license plates with white lettering on a green background, making them easier to distinguish from conventional vehicles.

The regulation also sets out colour codes for different categories of vehicles:

  • Commercial EVs: green plates with yellow lettering
  • Consular vehicles: white lettering on blue plates
  • Commercial vehicles: black lettering on yellow plates

The ministry said existing registered EVs must change to the new green plates within 60 days from the date the amendment came into effect.

The change is aimed at supporting the government’s efforts to promote environmentally friendly transport and improve identification of EVs on the road.

The regulations also prohibit the use of license plates that do not meet the specified standards, including plates with reflective colours.

In addition, the amendment is expected to simplify the registration process for some heavy vehicles, as part of broader efforts to strengthen the road transport system and encourage sustainable mobility across the Maldives.
