A US special representative is set to visit the Maldives as part of an official trip aimed at strengthening ties in the Indian Ocean region.
The US Special Representative for South and Central Asia, Sergio Go, will visit the Maldives and Sri Lanka from Friday to Tuesday, the State Department said on its website.
The visit is intended to reinforce regional partnerships and hold high-level discussions on security cooperation, according to the department.
During his time in the Maldives, Sergio is expected to meet senior government officials to discuss strengthening bilateral security ties. Talks will also focus on areas where the United States can support infrastructure development and economic growth.
The visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and the United States, which were established on 9 April 1966.
In Sri Lanka, discussions will centre on maritime and port security, as well as expanding trade relations.
The State Department said the Maldives and Sri Lanka are key partners in maintaining stability and security in the Indian Ocean, adding that the visit would support efforts to promote a free, open and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
