Police have stated that they have launched a special investigation into the fire incident at the Prime Fertilizer warehouse last night.

In a statement issued today, Police stated that on receiving reports of the incident, they had worked alongside MNDF's Fire & Rescue to bring the fire under control.

They said the scene is being processed, and a special investigation has been initiated to determine the cause of the fire.

The warehouse had been used to store pesticides, fertilizer, agricultural tools and a generator, according to Police.

One of the responding MNDF officers was hospitalized due to smoke inhalation. The fire left the warehouse burned beyond use, as well as causing damage to 13 motorcycles, a pickup truck and a Prime Fertilizers van parked in the vicinity.

Toxic fumes and smoke from the fire enveloped the area, leading to 77 people from 10 neighbouring residences having to be shifted to temporary shelter.

Prime Fertilizers has said that the warehouse was used to store 80 percent of their goods. The warehouse was not insured at the time of the incident.
