Male' City Council released an announcement last night that they are looking for a company to repair and maintain the Sinamale' flats and its elevators.

The announcement states that they are searching for a company to repair and maintain the Sinamale' 1, Sinamale' 2, Sinamale' 3 and Sinamale' 4 flats for a one-year period. After information is clarified on Thursday, bids are to be submitted on 6th March as per the announcement.

Along with the search for a company to repair and maintain the flats, the Male' City Council has also announced that they are looking for a company to repair and service the Sinamale' Flats and the elevators at the Male' Hiyaa Flats.

The announcements request interested parties who want to service, repair and maintain the Male' Hiyaa and Sinamale' flats to clarify any information on Thursday. Bids are to be submitted on 5th March.

While the announcements have been made by the Male' City Council, the government has decided to demolish the flats and construct completely new buildings. However, the practical work for that project has not begun as of yet.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has offered a special benefits package to residents of Male' Hiyaa and Sinamale' flats who have been unable to pay fines related to the flats for various reasons.

The President made the decision to waive the Male' Hiyaa and Sinamale' flat fines and offer compensation on 5th January, with the President informing the Male' City Council on 7th January.

Regulations set by the President:

  • The fines that have been accrued until now are to be waived due to payment inability.
  • A compensation of MVR 100,000 is to be given to the flat residents as a substantial amount of time has passed with the government not being able to solve the structural damage to the buildings.
  • When the compensation is being given, if the fines that are to be paid by the flat owners exceeds MVR 100,000, that amount will be forgiven. If the fine is below MVR 100,000, it will still be forgiven, with the rest of the compensation being deposited into the flat owners accounts.
  • The President has decided to deposit MVR 100,000 to the accounts of the apartment owners who have finished making payments so that they can own the flat.

President Muizzu stated in December 2023 that the issue of the Male' Hiyaa and Sinamale' flats being run down and coming apart is deeply concerning to him and that as a solution, the government had decided to newly construct the buildings under a set of predetermined regulations.

While highlighting that due to President Muizzu not being able to receive cooperation for many of his efforts from former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's government while President Muizzu was Mayor of Male', the first topic he had brought up once he took office was the repair of both of the buildings.
