President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has restored Gaaundoodhoo to the jurisdiction of Hulhudhuffaaru in Raa atoll, fulfilling a presidential pledge.

The decision was formalized through a presidential decree issued under powers granted by the Decentralization Act, which governs the designation of jurisdictions for city and island councils.

A revised chart reflecting Hulhudhuffaaru’s updated administrative boundaries has been published in the Government Gazette.

Hulhudhuffaaru was developed around 35 years ago following the relocation of people from Gaaundoodhoo and Ungoofaaru within the atoll.

Gaaundoodhoo had since remained under the Hulhudhuffaaru council’s jurisdiction until 25 August 2021, when the previous administration removed it and transferred it to the Ministry of Agriculture for industrial use.
