A Maldivian Thundu Kunaa (fine-pattern reed mat) has been placed at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
According to the Foreign Ministry, this Thundu Kunaa is a commemorative gift presented by the Maldives to the UN Headquarters.
The Ministry stated that the decision to place a Maldivian Thundu Kunaa at the UN Headquarters was made during President Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to New York for the UN General Assembly session in 2024.
The Thundu Kunaa to be kept at the UN Headquarters was inaugurated at a ceremony held there by the Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations, Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed.
This is the first time a Maldivian product has been placed at the UN.
The Ministry also noted that this mat was prepared to showcase Maldivian craftsmanship at the UN Headquarters in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of Maldivian independence and the 60th anniversary of the Maldives becoming a member of the UN.
The Thundu Kunaa placed at the UN was designed and woven by an individual from GDh. Gadhdhoo, the most famous island in the Maldives for Thundu Kunaa weaving.
