Police inspected the Male' beach area beneath the Sinamale' Bridge today after reports emerged of expatriates living there.
Police said that they had conducted the inspection following complaints on social media that a group of people were sleeping rough and living under the bridge.
Police said that they had observed signs of people occupying the space, and that they are working with relevant authorities to take appropriate action against the issue.
Police stressed that these situations may involve vulnerable persons requiring social assistance and support, and affirmed that they are collaborating with the related authorities to ensure their protection and uphold their interests.
They stated that prompt reporting facilitates rapid investigation and supports timely implementation of necessary measures.
The issue was raised on social media following a video published by 'Dhuvas' news outlet. The video shows temporary bedding laid out under the bridge, with one foreigner appearing to be asleep. The area is also covered in huge amounts of trash, as seen in the photos and videos.
Over the past two years, the government has stepped up efforts against persons living and working illegally in the country, as well as against employers who are negligent towards expatriate workers.
