The Maldives Transport Authority (TA) announces 7.8 Million Rufiyaa worth of parking fines have been pardoned.

All Illegal parking charges levied during 2015 and 2016, totaling up to fines worth exactly MVR 7,895,750 have become pardoned by the state.

In a press conference held by Ministry of Economic Development which currently oversees Maldives Transport Authority, Deputy Economic Minister Abdullah Shiyaz said that the decision to absolve fines was taken into consideration after a handful of road reconstruction projects had many individuals scurrying for limited parking spaces and plenty of fines.

Male’ Road Redevelopment Project sees a total of 13 roads being redeveloped within a two-year period with the last of the roads to be developed by September 2018.

According to TA's chairman Mahdi Imaad, the authority will work through the issues concerning the regulation of traffic, throughout the redevelopment of the roads.

Although TA has previously pardoned traffic fines, when inquired about levying charges only to pardon them later, Shiyaz responded that the reason traffic issues remain heavily regulated is because of the subsequent fines in place, stating that the current system is hence effective in tackling this issue.
