New Radiant Sports Club has appointed Sobah Mohamed Ibrahim as head coach ahead of the FAM League Cup, which begins Thursday, and the upcoming Second Division football season.
The club officially began its training sessions yesterday at Henveiru Stadium.
The League Cup, a calendar event by the Football Association of Maldives (FAM), features teams from both the Dhivehi Premier League (DPL) and the Second Division.
This tournament comes as an alternative tournament, with the official football league on hold due to ongoing amendments to FAM’s constitution and preparations for elections.
Participating clubs include Maziya, TC Sports, and Odi Sports from DPL, as well as Second Division teams New Radiant, Mahibadhoo Sports, and JJ Sports.
While competing in the League Cup, New Radiant’s primary focus remains on promoting from the Second Division.
The club, previously suspended and relegated by FAM, has been working for promotion over the past two seasons but has failed to reach the finals required for advancement.
Sobah, who was the club's first coach after their drop to the Second Division, left to coach Victory Sports Club last season and successfully guided them to promotion.
He now returns to New Radiant, with former players Adam Abdul Latheef (Lahchey) and Mohamed Faisal (Katey) joining his coaching staff as assistants. As Sobah is currently out of the country, Latheef will temporarily lead the team during the League Cup.
New Radiant’s squad consists mostly of young talent, with key experienced players such as Yasfaadh Habeeb (Mulakay), Moosa Yameen (Yaanbe), Mujuthaba Mohamed (Mujay), and Tholal Hassan (Toppal). The club is also exploring the possibility of signing foreign players to strengthen the squad.
Club Chairperson Ahmed Mubeen and co-founder Ahmed Waheed (Queen Waheed) attended yesterday’s official training session launch at Henveiru Stadium.
