Super United Sports (SUS), which withdrew from the first division citing financial difficulties, has been fined MVR 200,000.
Their vacated slot has now been awarded to New Radiant Sports Club.
The decision came after comparing New Radiant’s performance with Tent Sports, another team that reached the semi-finals of last year’s Second Division tournament. Both clubs had been in the same group during that competition.
In the second division tournament, New Radiant topped the group while Tent advanced as runners-up. Tent managed to score 20 goals from the group stage up to the semi-finals but conceded 11, whereas New Radiant scored 18 goals and conceded only 4. This gave New Radiant a superior goal difference of 14 compared to Tent’s 9. Adding to their advantage, New Radiant also secured a 3-1 victory over Tent in their head-to-head group stage clash.
With stronger overall results and a direct win over Tent, New Radiant was chosen to fill SUS’s spot in the top division.
