Maldives has played against Sri Lanka before at the Racecourse Stadium in December 2021. That match saw Sri Lanka lead 4-0, with Maldives tying by the end.

This time however, Maldives did not give Sri Lanka such a chance.

The first goal was scored by Naiz Hassan (Dhaadhu) who was assisted by Ibrahim Aisam (Tony) via a header from a corner kick.

The second goal was scored in the 35th minute by Ibrahim Mahdhy Hussain. Naiz sprinted past Sri Lankan goalkeeper Sujan Perera and passed to Ibbe where he scored on an open goal. Sri Lankan players appealed that the goal was offside.

The build up to that goal was attributed to Hamza Mohamed (Hampu) and Ahmed Rizwan.

Sri Lanka got a penalty within the second half, with the attempt swinging wide.

Maldives' third goal was scored by Ali Fasir (Sentey) with it being assisted by Mohamed Ilan Imran. Ilan was substituted in and played for the first time wearing the senior team's jersey.

His appearance in this game makes him the youngest player to play for the national team, being 16 years, 7 months and 20 days.

The second match between Maldives and Sri Lanka will be held this coming Tuesday.
